Why is it that strangers always talk to David when we’re out? He tries to look very unapproachable and angry but it never comes off that way. He claims that he hates them and never wants to speak to new people, but I think he’s lying, because I don’t understand it. I, on the other hand, am a more social creature, but I have the opposite problem. I look unapproachable when I would rather have people come talk to me. I think I’m the unpopular kid at school.

You so do not look unapproachable! I would so want to be your friend if I wasn’t already (am I being too forward to say that? Really, we need to do lunch so we can say that in real life - after spring break?) and didn’t know you and just saw you!
With girls it can be intimidating if you actually LOOK a certain way because others esp. other girls, but boys too, are intimidated by it i.e. if you’re pretty, which you definitely are!! Maybe that’s the reason : ) !! If David is trying to be unapproachable and angry maybe people feel like they are “helping” him out, lol (sorry David!).

“He tries to look very unapproachable and angry but it never comes off that way” - That bit cracked me up.
I guess Newtown’s theory of for every force there is an equal and opposite force just doesn’t apply to David…

although i was thinking and my response isn’t totally true because at church we are both always getting approached - because we are on stage and visible.
its weird… i wonder why everyone isn’t friendlier to each other overall.

Dude. I don’t know what’s going on there. B and I have the exact opposite situation. People are always talking and conversing with him, but he handles it well. I am very shy and reserved, and people don’t generally talk to me. I think it’s because I avoid eye contact. (Maybe eye contact has something to do with it. Dude! I don’t know. I’m just guessing here. :-) )

I agree with PP 100%. And for what it’s worth, you don’t come off unapproachable through your writing.
And I love the picture. I’ve been that kid. I’ve SO been that kid.

I get approached by the crazies. I don’t know what it is about me, they flock to me.

QueenBee, maybe you have it right, I know I have trouble making eye contact and I’m generally shy around strangers.
Jamie, I used to get approached ALL THE EFFING TIME by crazies when I lived in San Francisco. I’d be all like, “Dude, I know you’re a little crazy, but maybe don’t yell at me about how someone was trying to take your picture, while we’re crossing the street.” Also, I had a guy yell at me for not telling him who my dentist was.

David Poe Says:
I have been thinking on this, since this was posted. My conclusion is that I make a lot of eye contact, I am not afraid of looking at poeple. I think that makes them think I’m cool to talk.
Also, I usually don’t ignore them once we are talking. I am not bad at holding short conversations or throwing around random (and often useless) information.
So I guess, make eye contact and talk nicely.

Pfffttttt…. fiiine, I’ll practice not freaking out when strangers are near and if they talk to me. Usually I just laugh nervously (which sounds super fake and bitchy, I’m sure) and promptly run away, but I’ll try harder next time.

You’re funny. I’m the same way. And my husband is the talker. He claims he doesn’t want to talk, but he always does.
